Service Learning: School project

Each year, we establish relationships with service learning partners schools in the host country. The objective is to  visit a school and mutually develop learning opportunities to provide benefit from this unique and wonderful exchange with the students from the US.  Past fellows have partnered with Human Factor Leadership Academy (primary and high school) in Akatsi, Ghana and Colegio Nosara in Costa Rica to lead workshops and classes on leadership development, cultural exchange, and support existing academic coursework.

We endeavor to create an visit experience that is flexible and consistent with the host school’s needs and desires.  Our fellows often serve as teacher’s assistants during their classroom visits on a variety of subjects, including but not limited to, mathematics, spelling, reading comprehension, english/grammar, science, and other areas.

Typically, we engage with elementary aged students (kindergarten through sixth grade) and anticipate spending up to three (3) hours per school visit where pairs of our fellows will teach interactive sessions 60 mins - 90 mins each on intercultural exchange using UNESCO and OECD  global education competency standards.  Topics include:

Arts

Intercultural communication through the arts, using visual arts, crafts, music, or dance as the facilitating medium.
