10: Team Clean Water

Team Members: Melanie F., Mia H., Ian R.

Impact Partner: Stella’s Child (Indonesia)

The Challenge: Team 10 (Clean Water) aims to help Indonesian villagers develop a sustainable solution for access to clean water.

SDGs Addressed: (6) Clean Water & Sanitation

The Solution: We propose that in order to help the villagers of Karangasem Regency of Bali develop a sustainable solution for access to clean water that graphene water filters be introduced and implemented into their society. Graphene filters, often created with soybean oil, are two-dimensional meshes of carbon atoms arranged in the form of a honeycomb lattice. Graphene filters are highly renewable, reusable, and efficient to make as soybeans are popular agriculture for Bali. The graphene serves as a filtration system in water, separating contaminants and 99% of impurities more quickly and cheaper than any other filtration system.

The Reason: As a group, we selected SDG: Clean Water + Sanitation from Stella’s Child challenge because it baffled us that a resource that is often taken for granted in our lives--clean water--is something that others deeply desire and have minimal access to.
